Food Guide As Per Your Age – What You Should Eat

It is important to eat food items which suit our age, because the nutrients that are important in your youth may not be the same when you grow older.

It is said that maintaining a balanced diet throughout life is important, but it is equally important to have the diet at par with our age and stage as the key dietary requirements changes from time to time.

Age: 19-21

These seem to be the fastest years of one’s life full of adrenaline rush and the excitement of trying everything possible for a young teen. This rush causes some serious nutrition risks which include skipping breakfast, snacking, eating fast foods and missing out on fruit, vegetables, and wholegrain. The body during these years needs vitamins for health and wellbeing which are often ignored because of late night awakening, and an addiction to processed or takeaway foods.

With a need to look and feel great at work or when out with friends, one should focus on antioxidant nutrients which protect the skin, hair, and nails, such as vitamin C and selenium. Nuts, seeds, fruit, and vegetables are all great sources of this.

Age: 21-25

The focus for these years should on bone health. Key nutrients for bone health include magnesium and calcium. It is observed that more than a fifth of young women doesn’t get enough of these nutrients. Wearing makeup also prevents our bodies from making enough vitamin D.

It is advisable that just 15-20 minutes of sensible sun exposure on the face and arms in summer is a great way to boost vitamin D levels.

Age: 26-30

The late twenties is the time when one gets seriously involved in maintaining work-life balance. This may not be the time to feel fatigued due to iron deficiency.

Iron is found in green vegetables like broccoli and spinach, and in beans, pulses and fortified foods such as breakfast cereals. Iron is also vital for normal immune function.

Age: 31-35

The early thirties are considered as the busiest period of life, due to a busy career or the needs of a young family. Cooking/Eating fresh food on a daily basis, when the gym seems like a distant place, can be the last thing on your mind.

This is the life stage when muscle starts to decline. Protein is the most useful nutrient for keeping toned, as well as time-efficient exercises such as Tabata, HIT, or resistance training.

It is recommended that high-quality proteins are included in every meal. Mixing the proteins like chickpeas plus quinoa boosts the quality.

Age: 35-55

During the late thirties, we often start taking our good health for granted. As a result, balanced eating and exercise are often put on the back seat. The early signs of aging – sagging skin, lines, feeling tired and stressed – can be a warning sign to get your diet back on track and take some much-needed time to yourself.

Vitamins A and C protect the skin, while B vitamins and zinc combat stress and tiredness.
